Reflections with Andy - Tears - John 20: 11-18
Today, as Jesus is raised, He speaks with Mary Magdalene. What is interesting to me about this conversation is that she doesn’t recognize Him. They are talking, and she asks Him questions, but she doesn't recognize Him. It isn’t until He calls her name that she recognizes that Jesus is with her. Perhaps she cannot see Him because the tears she is crying hide Him from her. Today, don’t let your tears hide Jesus from you.

Good morning! It’s great to be with you today as we continue our journey through the Gospel of John. Today, we’re looking at John 20:11-18, where we see Mary Magdalene’s encounter with the risen Jesus. This is one of my favorite parts of the resurrection story.
This moment is so meaningful. Mary, a devoted follower of Jesus who had been saved and transformed by him, was the first to witness and proclaim the resurrection. In that culture, it was unheard of for a woman to hold such a role, but Jesus chose her. This reminds us not to overlook people we might not expect God to work through. Jesus shows us that everyone has value and a purpose.
Another key takeaway is Mary’s recognition of Jesus. At first, she didn’t realize it was him, possibly because her tears clouded her vision. It wasn’t until Jesus called her name that she saw him for who he was. This teaches us that, even in our grief or struggles, Jesus is present. Sometimes, it just takes a moment of clarity to recognize him.
Finally, this story reminds us of the hope and joy of the resurrection. Jesus defeated death, bringing life and restoration to the world. Just as Mary found renewed purpose through her encounter with Jesus, we too can find hope and direction by trusting in him.
So today, let’s reflect on this powerful moment and hold onto the hope Jesus brings. He is always with us, even when we can’t see him clearly. May we be open to his presence and willing to share the good news, just like Mary.
